Nate Berryman Steps Up to the Plate

Nate Berryman is an athlete, a coach, and most recently, a math teacher at Chamblee.

“I went to Berry College in Rome [Georgia] and played there for four years. Right after that I got into Legion Ball, an independent, semi-pro [organization],” he said.

Because he played travel baseball, Berryman has taken a somewhat unplanned tour of the U.S.

“I’ve travelled 48 of the 50 [states] … and I always find myself coming back here [to Georgia],” he said of his travels. The two states he has never been to are North Dakota and Wisconsin.

An arm injury prevented him from continuing to play, but Berryman is still passionate about the sport.

“I was head softball and head assistant baseball coach at Central Gwinnett High School for years,” he said. “This is my first year not coaching, which is something different.”

This year also marks Berryman’s 12th year of teaching. He is looking forward to teaching a variety of algebra classes.

“I love math,” he said. “It’s the only thing that makes sense. There’s always a right answer.”

Berryman noted both the similarities and differences between baseball and math.

“Basically, you concentrate on fundamentals to get where you want to go,” he said. “But it [baseball] is more psychomotor skills as opposed to mental skills. It’s a different way of learning, but I love both of them.”

He also already loves Chamblee and is looking forward to his first year here.

“I love it [here], I absolutely love it,” he said. “You have an outstanding teaching staff, you have an outstanding administration. I wake up everyday bragging to everybody that I get to come to this institution.”
