D.I.V.A.S Stepping Up

From February 2008:

With extreme talent and exemplary precision skills, the Chamblee Charter High School D.I.V.A.S stepped onto the scene this year bringing originality and creativity.
“The show was exciting and the girls did really well,” said Myriah Sparks. “They were original and got one of the best responses from the crowd.”
Practicing Tuesday to Thursday every week gives the endurance they need to excel in their performances. Sherron Dowdy, the D.I.V.A.S’s coach, has the girls repeatedly execute their routine until it is perfected. Half-doing things, even at practice, is not acceptable.
“The girls need to work on precision and overall showmanship,” said Dowdy. “They need to realize that it is a team effort, and that is when they will really improve.”
The D.I.V.A.S are judged on several things at competition. They must show great precision, originality, and unity. They must also be clearly understood when speaking and show great enthusiasm. Appearance is a big part of judging. The team must have a theme and commit to it during their entire routine, meaning their music and outfits have to tie back to the theme.
The D.I.V.A.S have competed in two competitions and plan on competing in several more before the school year is over. They have been doing very well, receiving second place in the first competition and third place out of nine in the second competition. They compete against high schools from all over DeKalb County, as well as schools from Gwinnett, Fulton and Rockdale counties and seasoned teams that are experienced in competing. For the D.I.V.A.S to go and place in both competitions after only being together for a semester says a lot about how talented they really are.
“It hurts me as a coach to know that my girls put one-hundred percent into their performance and still come out with second or third place, especially when I know and everyone else knows they deserved first,” said Dowdy.
Dowdy does feel that the girls have been cheated out of first place. The judges do not seem to overlook the fact that the D.I.V.A.S are from Chamblee High, one of the best academic schools in the state, and it shows on the scoring sheets when things do not add up right.
“I do believe that we have been cheated at competitions,” said Dowdy. “I think the fact that Chamblee gets recognized for academics, they cheat us. They don’t want us to have anything else.”
