Getting Ready for the Meat of the Schedule
Diamond Dogs looking for consistency
April 14, 2008
From April 2008:
Spring training is over and things are looking good on the diamond mound. The varsity baseball Bulldogs are 7-4 and looking for another win to add to their record.
“Overall we’re doing well,” said junior shortstop Ennis Coble. “We’re playing as a team.”
Already the season shows marked improvement from past seasons. Chamblee defeated Pace Academy (6-AA) 9-6 on Friday, March 21, and currently stands at fourth place in the region.
“We’ve hit the ball a lot better,” said head varsity coach Brian Ely. “We have great
approach at the plate, something we haven’t always had.”
However, in the March 20 game against Berkmar (8-AAAAA), the Diamond Dogs were shut out 13-0, ending a two-game winning streak following the Lakeside game.
“We need to be more consistent,” said Ely. “We’ve shown we can do it but we need
to get out there and keep doing it.”
Chamblee first beat North Springs 17-13 and then conquered Colombia (6-AAAA) 9-6.
“In the games we’ve won, we generally have a strong offensive output up and down the lineup,” said Ely. “I’d say that’s best shown by Sam Floyd’s bat. He’s hit two home runs this season so far.”
In the game versus recurring threat Lakeside, Chamblee was dominated 8-1 in an embarrassing defeat.
“It was brutal,” said Coble. “Against Lakeside, we didn’t play our game.”
Despite the tough loss, senior pitcher and team leader Lucas Henneman leads an optimistic and competitive team into the March and April games. The Bulldogs opened up their season on February 27 against Decatur High, crushing them 11-1. The following game, Chamblee was down to Martin Luther King but rallied and overpowered them in a 14-12 victory.
“Our pitching has been stellar,” said Ely. “Henneman has great offensive output especially during the comeback victory against MLK. He’s really delivered as a team leader.”
Chamblee suffered a loss to the Tucker Tigers on March 10, but are determined to turn the slump into a breakout season.
“While our hitting has been good, we’ll still have to do better as our region schedule approaches,” said Ely.
