Micah Anderson’s musical career began with an old trumpet.
“We had a trumpet laying around for some reason,” says Micah.
The trumpet came with several other used instruments, and his older brothers chose the clarinets. In fifth grade, Micah picked up the trumpet.
“I really liked it at first. I guess my love has kind of dropped off,” he says. “I didn’t practice at all over the summer. Maybe it’ll come back.”
In the meantime, this junior plays in the Jazz Band, searching for his lost talent. Perhaps the chorus stole it.
“I’m in chorus unofficially,” he says. “Chamblee doesn’t really have a men’s chorus and they needed guys to sing.”
Sports have not stolen his talent either, for Micah claims he is “out of commission” and “out of shape.”
A former football player and track runner, Micah has put a hold on his athletic life.
In fact, the true thief of Micah’s trumpeting and sports abilities is time, more specifically, schoolwork.
He fills his academic life with AP Calculus AB, but he is positive about the class.
“It means something [to me], because I might do something in math,” says Micah, who, thanks to AP Calculus, will not have to take math in college if he does not involve math in his career plans.
AP German is another difficult, yet rewarding class for Micah.
“I feel like my German is improving,” he says, “even if my grade isn’t so good.”
Looking forward, Micah thinks he might want to be a teacher.
“You get to do something different every day,” he says.
Teaching would also give him the opportunity to be around people, and different types of people at that. He likes that idea, especially since his love of people comes with a qualification.
“I like to have people around,” says Micah, “but I’m still kind of an introvert.”
Still, he says his ability to be around others and observe is what has given him the chance to meet so many different people, from the athletes to the “smart people” to “the people who mess around.”
It is this desire for variety that shapes Micah’s life — mysterious trumpet, “unofficial” singing, AP classes, and all.
