Senior Aya Rothwell won a button design contest in February sponsored by the Council for Exceptional Children.
The council will reward Rothwell with $100.
“I spent a couple of days during my study hall thinking about it, doodling,” said Rothwell.
The theme for the contest was “Making Connections,” and Rothwell thought the council would favor a simple design because of the size and shape of a button.
The three-year-old art student decided to create something geometric but forgot about the contest until the day it was due.
When art teacher Kim Landers reminded Rothwell of the deadline, she had to rush to do the coloring,
Her final design consists of three kids holding hands in a triangular shape.
“It kind of looks like the radioactive symbol, but not quite,” said Rothwell.
Rothwell hasn’t received the $100 yet, but she is already thinking about what she will do with the prize money.
“I could use some new watercolor brushes. I’ll probably end up just buying a book or something,“ said Rothwell.
