Many students join language clubs just to have something else to put on their college applications. Oftentimes, clubs are inactive. Well, Chamblee students can’t use the same old excuse because the World Languages Department has scheduled a year of varied and promising activities.
The language teachers came together and decided to do several inter-club activities. This means if a student becomes a member of one club, he or she has the option to participate in activities of other clubs. This alliance includes the Spanish Club, German Club, French Club, Latin Club, and ESOL.
On October 17, the French Club met at La Madeline for dinner. Secretary Priyanka Ray says the club’s agenda includes a “pastries-off” to sell French baked goods and a Thanksgiving dinner. Sponsor Debbie Peavy says they will probably have the usual “dinner and a movie” at a member’s house where students will watch a French film and share French dishes they’ve cooked.
The German Club, sponsored by Uwe Neuhaus and Rosemarie Kelly, planned a soccer tournament for November. It has been postponed until early February due to scheduling conflicts with the football season.
German members will also attend the German Convention in February, which will be held in Eatonton. They will participate in German activities and competitions with other schools. Kelly likes the idea of the clubs interacting because “It engenders the spirit of competition, a ‘world championship’ so to speak.” Kelly is referring to the goal each club had of maintaining high participation and ongoing activities.
Nora Floersheim and Maria Tiliakos sponsor the Spanish Club. Members went to Garcia’s for dinner on November 4. They have planned tango lessons by Tango Rio for December. Floersheim says the joint events will allow students to participate in cultural activities and interact more with their friends. The Spanish Club is still recruiting members. Dues are $5.
“It’s an excellent idea to have all the world languages participate in activities together because it builds camaraderie and creates enthusiasm,” comments Floersheim. Updates and information will be posted on the bulletin board in the language hall.
