I went to New York City this summer and loved it. I loved the busyness of the city and the variety of things to do. On our vacation, we stayed in a friend’s townhome in the West Village which made the whole stay significantly better. Considering I have five people in my family, we needed a larger place to stay in to make the trip more comfortable and we were lucky enough to have access to this townhome. Especially since New York is such a big city, having somewhere to go at the end of the day with enough room for everyone is vital.
My favorite part of my New York City vacation was up in a building called “The Edge.” We went in an elevator up 101 floors to get to the top of the building; at the top, people could go outside onto a porch-like area. There are glass windows surrounding the porch so people can see the entire city from high up. I was able to go at sunset which made for an ethereal view of the skyline. We also went on a ferry boat to the Statue of Liberty. While the Statue of Liberty was fascinating, I loved riding the ferry boat more; it was so peaceful and the wind felt nice because New York gets very hot in the summer.
Another memory from this trip was going to see Six the musical at the Lena Horne Theater on Broadway. Six is about the six ex-wives of King Henry VIII but with a more modern twist on the stories. I’m not a big fan of musicals, so this wasn’t my personal favorite part of the trip. While I thought the show itself was entertaining, the plot of the story and the character development was lacking. I wish the musical performed the story in more detail rather than just singing about it; I found that there wasn’t much acting throughout the show and it reminded me more of a concert than a musical.
My favorite aspect of New York was by far the variety of good food. Almost every morning we went to the Starbucks Roastery and Reserve for coffee, it was nothing like a normal Starbucks. At normal Starbucks the coffee is older and not made fresh but at the Starbucks Roastery and Reserve, the coffee is roasted and made fresh everyday which makes the coffee taste infinitely better. Another favorite place I went to is called Marinara. It’s a pizza place located on 1st Avenue. I got a slice of spicy rigatoni pizza, which is pizza with rigatoni pasta on top of it. I was shocked by how delicious it was. I also loved how unique the pizza was because I’ve never had anything like it.
In my opinion, this family vacation was my favorite by far; I loved every second I was in New York City. However, I would love to experience seeing New York City during Christmas time as well. I would love to see the Rockettes perform at Radio City Music Hall and to go ice skating, which are options only available during the winter. I think it would be interesting to see the contrast between the seasons and to see the attractions unique to Christmas time.
