At the start of every school year, Chamblee High School welcomes many new faces. Chamblee receives new students every school year but they also welcome new administration. Students can learn about new teachers by being in their classes, or through peers in those classes, but what about new faculty members? Nikki Evans a new member of Chamblee’s administration team is currently working at the front office. She is coming from a job in the Chamblee area.
“I was at a medical office, little further down the street. On Peach Tree Road,” said Evans.
She enjoyed her time, however left due to scheduling conflicts.
“My daughter is very young in elementary school, and I needed to get on her schedule,” she said. “Being a working mom, when [students] have holidays and days out, I would have to ask my mom to keep her so I decided either I would try and work from home or I would work for the school system.”
When looking for a job Ms. Evans was offered guidance and direction.
“A friend of mine who works under DeKalb County told me about a job fair, and I went over to see what I was capable of doing,” she said.
Evans was excited to start the school year.
“To my surprise, everyone here’s so friendly and so open,” she said.
It was easy to pick up the pace of how the front office was run at Chamblee and credited her old job because it was also an office job. Even though Evans doesn’t work with students directly, she has some meaningful advice for Chamblee students:
“Focus and understand that [high school] is a great journey that you’ll look back on years from now,” she said. “Don’t stress over something that you can’t change and don’t try to compare your journey with your friend’s or another student.”
Evans also enjoys the new benefits of working for Dekalb.
“[DeKalb has] provided transportation for [my daughter] to come up here when she’s out of school, to sit with me while I finish work. Therefore aftercare is not something that I need to pay for, which is great. I have no regrets,” said Evans.
Evans is already comfortable in an office thanks to her past job and the rest of the staff are so welcoming. She is looking forward to the rest of the year, and to making memories at Chamblee.
