I want to talk about expectations that people expect from you.
An expectation is a belief that someone will or should achieve something. So now that we got the meaning of expectations I want to dive in as to why I think expectations are something that makes every teen stressed out. An expectation can come from anyone. It can be from your family, however it can also come from friends and teachers, peers, or fellow co-workers.
Expectations are something I have always struggled with. It feels like you really have to do your best or try your hardest to make someone feel good about you. There are days I believe that some people seeing you exceed expectations they had for you sometimes motivates them, and that is good.
Nonetheless trying to exceed expectations or try hard to live up to those expectations can be exhausting. That’s what sometimes many people feel when they have to work to exceed someone’s expectations. Like I said: expectations are good for some people. It makes them work hard and push until their ultimate dream or goal.
However for many it sometimes makes us feel like we have to work hard to prove ourselves. I know that many people will tell me that this world is not fair. Well folks, it probably never will be. Sometimes it’s just hard to keep pushing when it seems no one else is pushing you. So when things or situations come into our lives we tend to not keep going or not keep pushing towards those expectations which ultimately results in us not exceeding expectations. If that happens, many people who expected great things from you then get disappointed or frustrated with you as to why it didn’t happen.
I get it, folks. I mean as the oldest sibling many people expect a lot from me. So yeah, I get it – just don’t forget to take care of yourself. I don’t mean that you shouldn’t keep going but rather if needed you should take a break, take care of yourself. I have found that many times taking a minor break helps me to then get more energy to keep going and to not give up. I know many may find it skeptical, and to that I say to everyone: you do you.
Just do what is best for you, do what you think is best for your future. Whether that may be to pursue a bachelors degree in teaching or going to nursing school, or becoming a lawyer or going to trade school or starting your own business after high school. Do what is best for you and your future. I am not saying that your family shouldn’t be deciding what you should do in the future, but if you feel you can’t do what they ask, it’s okay. It may take a while for them to understand you but I promise they will at their own time. So don’t stress too much over expectations people have of you, worry more over your own goals and what you want to achieve in your life.
