Lady Gaga has been teasing new music since last year, so I have been looking forward to MAYHEM for a while. After listening to the full album and spending more time with the songs, I wanted to do a review on the album.
Disease: 7/10
Disease was released as the lead single for MAYHEM in October 2024 with a music video. I loved it when I first heard it, and that hasn’t changed. I enjoy everything about this song. The lyrics are fun and playful, the vocals are hypnotic, and I can’t listen to it without wanting to dance.
Abracadabra: 7/10
Abracadabra was released as a single in February and used in most of the promotional videos for MAYHEM, so I already knew that I liked it
Garden Of Eden: 9/10
Because Disease and Abracadabra were singles, Garden was the first song that I was hearing for the first time, and I liked what I heard. It’s such a catchy song that fits the fun, dark, electro-pop vibe of Disease and Abracadabra. I also loved the Biblical reference because it felt like a call back to Judas from her earlier album, Born This Way.
Perfect Celebrity: 7/10
Just like the previous songs, Perfect Celebrity is super catchy with fun, witty lyrics. It discusses Gaga fame, like the name suggests. Specifically how the media loves to find things to dislike and nitpick about celebrities, which has been done to Gaga countless times. I think it’s a very fun and well written song but the lyrics are definitely my favorite thing about this song.
Vanish Into You: 7/10
I really liked this song, I just didn’t stand out as much to me as other songs on the album. With that being said, it felt reminiscent of her earlier works, which I enjoyed.
Killah (feat. Gesaffelstein): 5/10
This song was not my favorite when I first listened to it, but the more I listened it grew on me. It’s silly and fun, just not a song I feel like I’ll find myself returning to a lot.
Zombieboy: 5/10
I loved this song because of how quirky it was. The chorus is fun and the lyrics made me giggle, but it sounds a little bit like disease to me. They are on the same album, but I feel like there should be more distinction with how songs from the same album sound.
LoveDrug: 8/10
I liked the song at first, but when I heard the chorus I fell in love. Something about the way Gaga sings the chorus is so satisfying to me. I think this is a definite contender for my favorite song from the album, and I haven’t been hearing anyone talk about it.
How Bad Do U Want Me: 5/10
The start was ok, I’m just not totally in love. I’ll admit it’s fun and I could definitely see myself enjoying listening to this, but it’s just not my typical musical mood.
Don’t Call Tonight: 7/10
I actually liked this song more than I thought I would. It definitely didn’t stand out to me on my first listen, but I do enjoy it now that it’s grown on me. It’s catchy, but other than that it didn’t stand out that much.
Shadow Of A Man: 8/10
I really liked listening to this song. This is another song I haven’t heard people talking about online, which is unfortunate because it’s such a fun listen. I like how hype the beat is, it makes me want to nod my head to the beat.
The Beast: 8/10
This song definitely stands out to me because of its mysterious sound. I enjoyed the production and overall sound of this song. I think this song is very enjoyable to listen to. The way it stands out from the rest of the songs is what makes me enjoy this song so much.
Blade Of Grass: 7/10
This is really the only slow, deep song on the album. The lyrics are so sweet and delicate, which is very different from the rest of the album. However, I think it still fits into the album. The heartfelt lyrics are what makes this song so special.
Die With A Smile: 6/10
This song has been out for a while, and became very popular online, so I had heard it a lot. So much, that it became slightly overplayed for me. It’s still a beautiful song, just lost points on my ranking because I have heard it so much.
Overall, I think this album was worth the wait. I have heard people say this album wasn’t cohesive, however I think all the songs go together.
