Photography Beyond Instagram

For many students, photography is not much more than casually taking a selfie and uploading it to Snapchat.
But for junior Georgia Wescott, taking pictures has been a long-time passion.
“It really started my freshman year, when I went to London for spring break,” said Wescott. “That previous winter, I had gotten a camera and photography classes for Christmas. After that, I tried everything out, but I don’t think I really started developing any skills in photography until my sophomore year.”
Wescott added that she particularly enjoys taking pictures of people.
“The photos of London are all landscapes, but I definitely find it more interesting to take portraits of people,” said Wescott.
Like many photographers, Wescott draws her inspiration from pictures she sees online, as well as blogs such as Humans of New York.
“I like that [Humans of New York], but I also really like more artistic ones too,” said Wescott. “There’s this girl named Isabella Madrid, and she does a lot of artistic self-portraits that I think are really cool.”
Wescott is active in the online photography community, and she even has her own website.
“I use Flickr a lot,” said Wescott. My website is just georgiawescott.com, and my Flickr account is Georgia.Wescott.”
Although she primarily focuses on pictures of others, Wescott also enjoys taking the occasional self-portrait.
“I don’t take as many now, but I feel like with taking self-portraits, I can do whatever I want,” said Wescott. “Sometimes, I don’t feel comfortable telling people to do certain things all the time, but when I’m taking pictures of myself, there’s obviously fewer boundaries.”
