With the start of a new school year comes new people entering the halls of Chamblee High School. These new individuals aren’t just students, some of them are teachers and staff. One such person is Reena Moorman, a new assistant principal at our school. Although Moorman is new to Chamblee, this is not her first time teaching in DeKalb County.
“I have worked as a math teacher in Atlanta public schools,” said Moorman. “I’ve also worked as an academic coach and assistant principal in other DeKalb County Schools.”
When asked about her thoughts on Chamblee compared to other schools she has worked at, Moorman had only positive things to say about her little time here.
“So far, everyone has been extremely nice and welcoming, students and staff included. It just seems like a very happy place to be [working at],” said Moorman.
There are many reasons why teachers may choose to teach high school students as opposed to other grade levels. Some do it because they like kids, or because they are interested in the subject they teach. Moorman does it because it brings her joy.
“I love working with high school students,” said Moorman. “It is my passion.”
One may also wonder as to why she came to Chamblee after years of teaching other places, and she shared her reason for that decision as well.
“I came to Chamblee, specifically, because I am a part of this community,” said Moorman. “I really just want to be someone who adds value to this community and someone who helps to maintain the excellence that’s already here.”
As to why she chose to teach in general, her trajectory was impacted by former teachers.
“I had so many favorite teachers. I think that’s why I’m an educator today,” she said. “My math and language arts teachers were particularly my favorites. I think they always saw something special in me, sometimes where I didn’t see it myself, and encouraged me to be to be great and to apply for different things, including applying for college here in Atlanta.”
Outside of school, Moorman enjoys various activities from quality time with family to trying new foods. As far as advice for students, she says that getting involved with school activities is important.
“There are a lot of opportunities here at Chamblee High School. [It] seems like Chamblee has a lot of clubs, activities, and sports. So just take advantage. Take advantage of every moment that you have here, because these are friends and memories that you will probably remember for a lifetime,” said Moorman.
Moorman has a special request for the students of Chamblee High School if they want to get to know her.
“I like it when students come up to me and introduce themselves,” said Ms. Moorman. “So definitely keep an eye out for Ms. Moorman and say hello when you see me.”
