Both Soccer Teams Defeated in the First Round of the State Playoffs

From May 2010:

As the season nears its end, the girls’ varsity team is looking back on it with a positive attitude. With a record of 10-4-0, the team proceeded to the playoffs round for the second time in Chamblee history.

Although seeded number three in Region 6-AAAA, Chamblee has not had an easy season. Multiple players on the team have had injuries that have prevented them from playing in a number of games. These players included junior Taylor Smith, sophomore Jenna Bayne, sophomore Mary Lou Ferguson, and junior Chelsea Gill-James. Although having four players out at one time was a definite disadvantage to the team, head coach Jeremy Karassik looked at it from a positive viewpoint.

“I think it was positive in some ways because girls stepped up and played positions they never had before, said Karassik. “It unified the team, I think. It hurt us in some ways too, though. We definitely could have beat Heritage if we hadn’t had all these injuries.”

On Wednesday, April 28th, the Chamblee girls played Sequoyah in the playoffs. After a nail-biting game, Sequoyah won 3-2 in overtime.

“We should have won,” said captain Tyler Wilson. “We played really well. Our strategy is to play a short passing game and we executed all of our combinations with the utmost precision. The ball was on their end for three-fourths of the game so I would definitely say we dominated. Unfortunately, they scored off of a cheap free kick. It was just bad luck for us.”

Along with the team’s astonishing record and their successful season, the girls’ varsity team has scored a mind-blowing number of goals: 76.

“Our offense is better this year. We’ve started scoring more, and a larger variety of players have scored,” said Karassik. “We lost mostly defensive players from last year and we were left with more offenders.”

The Chamblee boys’ team has also had a productive year. After a tough season, the team has muscled their way into the last spot in the playoffs where they played Dalton.

“It was either us, Tucker, or Central Forsyth going to playoffs,” said Coach Uwe Neuhaus. “We were in a three-way tie with them and it came down to who had the better goal differential.”

Luckily, Chamblee came out on top of this three-way tie and proceeded to playoffs. Unfortunately, though, the team experienced a 4-0 defeat after a tough game.

“It was a frustrating game,” said captain Rob Kelly. “I didn’t think that they were as good as some of the other teams we had played during the season, like North Springs and Lakeside, but they were still good.”

The team was down only 1-0 after the first half and in order to push the ball to Dalton’s half and pressure their goal, Coach Neuhaus moved the team’s formation around to ensure they had more forwards. Unfortunately, this plan did not work as it was supposed to, as Dalton scored another three goals.

“Even though we lost, it was great that we made it to State,” said Kelly. “It was my last season with the team and it would have felt incomplete if we hadn’t made it.”
