The 2011 Super Bowl: Koeplin’s Packers vs. Branca’s Steelers

Danielle Reed

From February 2011:

Chamblee’s own Coach Kurt Koeplin and Amy Branca are die-hard fans of their NFL teams, and this year their teams the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers are going to go head to head for the championship. The Blue & Gold asked each of them eight questions about the 2011 Super Bowl.

Koeplin- Packers

Q: Why are the Packers going to win the Super Bowl?

A: They’re among the best teams in the NFL and they got hot at the right time.

Q: Who is/are going to be the most valuable player(s) in the game?

A: Erin Rogers, the QB, because they’re playing inside and he has ungodly abilities in dome stadiums. His numbers there are better than they are outside. The Packers receivers are as a group better than the Steelers’ defensive backs.

Q: Why won’t the Steelers win?

A: The Packers’ D is going to turn their game upside down.

Q: How long have you been a Packers fan and why?

A: For 43 years and because I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Q: Have you bet on the game? How much?

A: Breakfast with Branca if the Packers lose, and she buys if they win. I also bet my neighbor. Whoever loses has to cut the lawn we share all summer.

Q: Do you have any rival friends or family?

A: My neighbor at home and co-worker.

Q: Where are you going to watch the game?

A: At home more than likely. Otherwise, I might start a fight somewhere.

Q: What will you do to celebrate if the Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl?

A: I’ll probably run around the code sect with a Packers flag, taunt my neighbor and come back to school to enjoy a breakfast.

Branca- Steelers

Q: Why are the Steelers going to win the Super Bowl?

A: #1: Ben Roethlisberger; he can get out of trouble. He can scramble. He’s huge. #2: A beast we call James Harrison; The best and most physical linebacker in the NFL. #3: Troy Polamalu. You cannot plan for him no matter how hard you try. #4: It is our destiny. This is the stairway to seven, the 7th Super Bowl the Steelers would have won; the most ever in NFL history.

Q: Who is/or are going to be the most valuable player(s) in the game?

A: Mike Wallace; #17 wide receiver. He’s big play. His average catch in yards is 40, which is almost half the field.

Q: Why won’t the Packers win?

A: This is hard because I’m from Iowa, a small town, so I’ve kind of grown up as a Packers fan. Any other year I’d be rooting for them. They’re not going to win because Erin Rogers has a hurt shoulder, they’re downplaying it, but it’s going to be a close game. They’re good.

Q: How long have you been a Steelers fan and why?

A: Since 1972 because my dad worked for IBM and we moved to Pittsburgh. He bought season tickets so when I was five he took me to every game and that’s when I became a fan.

Q: Have you bet on the game? How much?

A: Coach Koeplin and I have bet that the loser buys the winner breakfast. I’m not talking about some Egg McMuffin from McDonald’s either.

Q: Do you have any rival friends or family?

A: Yes, a friend from Wisconsin, and my husband was a Falcons fan, but all of my friends know better than to root for the Packers in my face because I take it seriously.

Q: Where are you going to watch the game?

A: I don’t know yet. I wanted to go to Dallas, Texas to watch it in person but that would be a $5,000 trip.

Q: What will you do to celebrate if the Pittsburgh Steelers win the Super Bowl?

A: I’m not going to do anything special to celebrate because it’s nothing new to us. We’re used to winning. I’d give a high “7” maybe. I won’t rub it in anyone’s face. Excellence doesn’t breed arrogance. You have to let your actions speak louder than your words.
