Everyone has their city, the once place where the air feels more alive and the food tastes like it has been passed down through generations. For me, that place is New York City. People love to complain about the noise, the prices, and the pure annoyance caused by pigeons, but there is a reason why millions of us keep choosing this concrete jungle over other cities. It isn’t just about the landmarks, it’s about the intense energy of a city that never sleeps.
You can travel the whole city without ever leaving the subway system. One afternoon you’re eating an authentic New York hotdog stand on the corner of 6th Avenue and 52nd Street. Then by dinner you’re sitting in Tribeca at l’Abeille, with their menu blending Japanese and French techniques. NYC is a mosaic where cultures don’t just stand side by side, they blend together and create something new. It is the only place where you can hear six different languages spoken on a single block.
NYC is also known for the psychological shift people experience when they step onto the streets of the city. Everything around you has the wow factor added to it and everyone is moving with a purpose. Whether you’re an upper executive or a freelance artist, the city acts as though you are the “main character” of your own story.
Although the city is famous for its grit, the true beauty of NYC is often found in the hidden details; the way the Empire State Building glows through the fog, the peaceful silence of a brownstone lined street in Brooklyn, or the golden hour lighting hitting the glass tours of the skyline. The city has seen it all and continues reinventing itself every time. The spirit of community is born out of the shared struggle, whether surviving a blizzard or a huge subway delay, it creates a bond among strangers that is singular to NYC.
Overall, New York City is my favorite city because it doesn’t allow you to settle for “fine.” You aren’t just living in the city, your part of a pulse that never stops beating.
